How
we get "unstuck" ? How do we progress an idea
that seems to be going nowhere ? How can we find more
options or choices about what to do in a situation ?
The
Disney Creativity Strategy
offers an explicit technique to help all the above situations.
It was modelled by the Disney Corporation which had
three departments focusing on different senses.

The
DREAMERS (idea,
vision, or outcome creators)
- Visual Dissociated
Does it look right ? Is it what's wanted ?
Think
of a time when you were really creative and
had some creative choices to make. Step into the dreamer
role and relive it. If not, think of a metaphor associated
with the problem and chunk it - up and down. What
choices did you make ?
The
REALISTS (implementers,
resourcers)
- Feelings Associated
Does it feel right ? Does
it work?
Think
of a time when you were being careful or realistic.
Is there a tried and tested framework that you used
? Did you check out what others thought ? Where
did the resources come from ?
The
SPOILERS (critics)
- Auditory Associated (inner
voice)
Does it sound right ? Is it interesting
or entertaining ?
Think
of a time when you criticised a plan in a constructive
way and saw the weaknesses as well as the strengths,
and identified the problems. What were you saying
to yourself ?
After
each step you go back to a neutral position (Meta position).
Then go back to the dreamers position and change the
idea, vision or outcome to overcome the feedback from
the other positions. Notice which one of these three
roles were missing in meetings to ensure a balanced
decision is reached.
