You
only see what you're looking for
We are all unique observers of the world. To interpret
what we see, we need to have seen it before. If not,
it remains hidden from us simply because we have no
previous experience or mind map to draw on. What we
don't see limits what we can do. We have to remind the
observer (ourselves) to question, challenge and be curious
enough to make sense of unfamiliar patterns.
For
example, our habits lock us in to a particular 'way
of being', where we think, feel and do things unconsciously.
Because they are transparent to us we pay little attention
to them. It's not until those habitual ways of thinking
stop working for us do we start to question and challenge
ourselves again, thereby making ourselves conscious
of our own thoughts, feelings and actions. These habits
can hold us back from living authentically and living
our lives to their fullest potential.
Ontology
(in a non-metaphysical sense) is the study of being.
Our 'way of being' seen as a combination of our observations
and perceptions interpreted through language, mood and
bodily action. It influences what we believe it is possible
for us to be as human beings. Ontological Coaching therefore,
gets to the heart of what it means to be human, enabling
us to become more powerful observers of ourselves and
others and create a better future for ourselves.
With
the help of an Ontological Coach you can learn how to
observe your experience in new ways and reveal what
would otherwise be hidden from you. The three domains
that form our 'way of being' are our bodies (physiology
and posture), moods (emotions) and language
(conversations). Together they impact our sense
of peace and productiveness, as well as our relationships
with others.

WAY
OF BEING MODEL
Developed
by Alan Sieler, Newfields Institute, Australia
The
power of the authentic observer
The discipline now known as the Ontology of the Human
Observer is bringing about new ways to use language
to communicate with ourselves and others with greater
power and influnce. It also brings together new theoretical
models and integral thinking that is enabling Coaching
to be recognised as a professional practice. Given that
we dont see the world the way it is, only the
way we think it is, we must learn how to use language
to serve our deepest intentions. This, as Neil
Crofts observes,
enables us to become authentic human beings. Our being
is the hidden part of ourselves (our soul if you like)
that does not change, but defines us as unique. If you
believe this, then your real self needs to be revealed
from the inside-out and
not changed from the outside-in.
This achieved through the way we use language, use our
bodies and our emotions to communicate.
Changing
the way we communicate will change the world. We are
obsessed with our state of becoming, our ability to
adapt and evolve to fit the prevailing conditions. By
focusing on our desired way of being we can influence
those conditions and create the future we want.
I
am inviting you to become a more powerful observer of
your thinking and gain a new and practical understanding
of how you can use your language, mood and body states
to serve your deepest human desire to be at peace and
to be productive. You will:
See your concerns and circumstances
in more empowering ways
Experience a renewed sense of wellbeing and peace of
mind
Find it easier to evaluate choices and make decisions
Communicate with confidence and build productive relationships
Gain a deeper and more holistic understanding of who
you are
Coaching
relies on conversations making a difference. And as
an NLP Practitioner I know how to use our body's senses
and to programme the mind to observe reality in ways
that enable you to be happy in all aspects of your life.

How
scientific is Ontological Coaching ?
The new Complexity Sciences, that include the Biology
of Cognition in living systems (pioneered by Humberto
Maturana &
Fernando
Flores)
and the application of existential philosophy to lingusitics
(developed through the writings of Friedrich Nietzche,
Martin Heidegger and Ludwig Wittgenstein). We have seen
a coming together of eastern (metaphysical) and western
(rational) thinking. New discoveries in Quantum Physics
and the Neurological Sciences (developed by thinkers
such as Ken
Wilber.
have also contributed to our understanding of ontology.

Integral
means comprehensive, balanced, embracing. When it
comes to human beings, integral means maps, models
and practices that include the full spectrum of
human potentials, often summarised as exercising
body, mind, and spirit in self, culture, and nature.
Ken Wilber |
The
new sciences are bringing new insights that are leading
to what Clare
Graves describes as a hierarchy
of human behaviour and values
within and between individuals. This takes
place over time and is subject to the observer (how
you and I seeing things differently) and to the level
of consciousness involved. Consequently there cannot
be one best end state - no nirvana. This makes the process
of human development a never ending journey, as each
level emerges and combines with the next level like
a spiral.

More about Spiral Dynamics
Dudley
Lynch
outlines below the forces that hold people in a given
system or drive them to move onto the next one. We tend
to alternate between being
self aware and being group orientated - as
things happen to us in our lives we move from one change
zone to the next driven by either the pain
or exhaustion of having to do it all yourself to find
a group or being frustrated by the restrictions of the
group and being driven to go it alone. Herein lies the
link between personal and cultural change.

Why
Ontological Coaching ?
Ontological Coaching embraces an integrated and emergent
view of individual and collective change, dealing directly
with the fundamental questions. "Who am I (we)
?", "What should I (we) be doing ?",
"Where do I (we) want to get to ?", "How
worthwhile is my (our) existence ?" and "What
behaviours and values do I (we) want to have ?"
The
use of the term "ontology" to describe this
kind of coaching to the human soul, is drawn from the
work of Martin Heidegger who used the term to refer
to "dasein", our generic understanding or
our interpretation of what it means to be human. It
is this ontology that grounds the process of coaching
and makes it an authentic discipline.
We
can therefore say that every statement made by an observer
(you or me) reflects the kind of observer we see ourselves
to be. We may not realise it, but we do it nevertheless.
So, any declarations, assessments, assertions, offers,
request or promises we make reflect how we see the world
and how the world sees us.
What
makes coaching ontological ?
Ontology is the study of human existence - a 'way of
being' in the world. This involves more than just changing
our behaviour or solving problems. How we perceive and
interpret our context and circumstances impacts greatly
on our quality of existence and our ability to communicate
effectively with others. Our life and work revolves
around the conversations we have with ourselves and
others, yet they can so easily be ignored as a major
source of learning and change. Different ways of thinking
enable more effective ways of communicating.
An
Ontological Coach understands the ontology of language
and can see human beings as living in language. This
personal language allows us all to have a unique 'way
of being' which influences how we see reality and engage
with the world around us. As Maturana reminds us "everything
said is always said by someone".
As
Chalmers
Brothers explains
clearly in his book 'Language and the Pursuit of Happiness'
language is not just a tool we use to describe things,
it defines us and enables us to generate effective action,
through positive emotions, even our sense of identity
and wellbeing. Consequently, Ontological Coaching brings
together what Alan
Sieler
describes as the three essential domains of human existence
- language, emotions and body, which we can generate
more impact through authentic and powerful ways of being.
We
create our reality through the way we use language to
observe and interpret what is possible (our possibility
space) and what is not possible for us.
We then test that observation through conversations
with others, learning how to make declarations,
requests, promises and assessments to get
what we want. Our competence in using these processes
often determines who we are, what we do and how successful
we can be.
The
key presuppositions for Ontological Coaching are that:
We don't know how things are.
We only know how we observe them or interpret them to
be
We live in worlds of interpretations (not objective
reality)
It's
not the truth that matters because nobody knows what
that is. It's about the power and authority given to
our intepretations as they open and close possibilities
for action. Let's look at the main Linguistic Acts that
generate our being in the world and lie at the core
of Ontological Coaching.
Language
is also seen as generating action because it creates
our sense of being and becoming. It defines us and what
we can achieve.
We
not only ACT according to how we ARE
We
ARE according to how we ACT
We take action to generate our being
We
become what we do
Language
made us human beings. As it says in EXODUS "In
the beginning was the word and the word was with God,
and the word was God". I
see it as an evolutionary issue with spiritual implications.
Science tells us that language is not a biological creation
it's a social one. Other animals have our senses, but
do not use language to enhance their level of consciousness
and creativity. The power of language is in the space
between people (the dance) for making distinctions and
connections that enables coordinated and purposeful
action (or inaction) to happen between small or large
numbers people.
The
Linguistic Acts
It
is language that allows us to change our way of being
to create our own future. The stories we create to interpret
our world, the metphors we give meaning to, the words
that move us to action are examples of the power of
language to create the future. Whatever we want to achieve,
self talk will play a major role. Let's look at the
six Linguistic Acts idenified by Fernando Flores and
their relevance to Ontological Coaching.
DECLARATIONS
... creating space for
new action
A
declaration brings forth new possibilities, a new way
of seeing things or a new context. It starts the change
process from which new actions and results can flow.
Mood influences the types of declarations we can make,
whilst declarations can be used to change a mood. Examples
of declarations would be yes and no, thank you, I forgive
you. I am . . . this is not working, etc. It's the first
act in creating a new 'way of being' in the world.
Ontological
Coaching is the most advanced and a powerful method
for enabling it's users to create a new reality for
themselves through declaraions in order to, for example
....
reach ever higher levels of competence
engage in genuine transformation
develop leadership and management excellence
become an effective organisational change agent
learn a truly professional approach to coaching
What
makes Ontological Coaching such an extraordinarily powerful
and highly effective method, is it's growing popularity
amongst business leaders and service managers, HR and
OD professionals, as well as ambitious individuals wanting
to live more authentically.
REQUESTS & OFFERS
... making an offer calling
for commitment
Ontological
Coaching focuses on a person's "Way of Being"
in the world, going beyond skills and goal driven strategies
to offer people profound learning and deep lasting change.
"
. . real learning gets to the heart of what it means
to be human."
Peter Senge, a global
leader in organisational learning.
You
may be someone who wants to change their behaviour in
order to transform their life, or a professional person
working to deliver behavioural or cultural change in
their organisation. If you are serious about wanting
to create real and lasting change, you will gain a lot
by understanding Ontological Coaching and what it has
to offer you and/or your organistion. Subscribe to the
ChangeZone Newsletter now and find out more.
ASSESSMENTS & ASSERTIONS
... offering an opinion
with or without evidence
Our assertions are facts and truths as we see them for
which we can supply "evidence". They can be
true or false, and verified by an independent third
party. Assessments on the other hand have the status
of judgements, assumptions or opinions about what is
being observed. They are seen as good or bad, right
or wrong. Sometimes the distinctions become blurred
and assertions achieve the status of assertions (seen
as fact).
Some
of the personal and professional benefits of Ontological
Coaching include ....
The
above improvements help individuals and hence the organisation
to become more creative and lead real change successfully.
PROMISES & COMMITMENTS
... making a commitment
to provide something specific within a given timescale
