xxThe GROW Model

xxFROM INITIAL IDEA TO FINAL IMPLEMENTATION

This is one of the best known and widely used coaching models developed by Sir John Whitmore in 1992.

It provides a framework for navigating a route through a coaching session. The GROW Model is summarised in the diagram below.

It starts with an initial dialogue to clarify the context, style and expectations of the coaching relationship. The next session can then focus on establishing a SMART goal or outcome to be achieved. Making it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and as Timebound as possible, focuses the mind and provides evidence of progress and achievement.

Having established the goal or desired future state, it is necessary to be clear about current reality - what the situation is like now.The options for action then become obvious and the choices more straightforward. It is then essential to find the will and the resources to make the journey and stick at it.
