Developed
in the 1970's by Tim Gallwey when doing some tennis
coaching at his local club.
Noticing
that players improved their tennis, despite the coaching
they received made Tim curious
about how the learning was actually taking place.
He
noticed that there was an internal conversation going
on in the player's head, but not sure who was saying
what to whom? The talking part he called Self 1 and
the partbeing talked at Self 2.
To
reduce the interference that Self 1 generates it is
necessary to increase the flow of energy that delivers
performance found in Self 2 - a state of non-judgemental
awareness. Focused awareness requires a high level of
consciousness in order to block out the negative chatter
from Self 1.
The
challenge for all of us is to be the master or mistress
of our own mind. One way is to give Self 1 something
to do. For example, ask . . .
What do you notice ?
What else ?
Which of these is most interesting to you ?
These
questions create a state of focused but relaxed concentration
which leaves no space for Self 1 and so releases Self
2's potential.
