x xDO WHAT WORKS - DON'T ANALYSE THE PROBLEM

Created by Steve de Shazar at the Brief Family Therapy Centre in 1978

This approach is designed to find out what works well for you as an individual (inside-out) defined in simple terms. There are no deep theories. I use my Dynamic Change Model (note the green italics) to strengthen the approach and ensure that all the bases for achieving real change are covered. The emphaisis is on small interventions that can move you towards your desired solution or to a higher level of consciousness (top-down).

It works with individuals in relationships or small groups (bottom-up). This is because change stems from the interactions - how people respond to each other and their context (outside-in).

It uses the so called Miracle Question to tease out what changes you would notice if the problems you were concerned about just didn't exist. What would you see, feel and hear ? It looks for the exceptions that make the difference when you are looking for quick wins.

The main tools of a solutions focused approach are:

To establish a platform. Converting a problem or issue into a platform for finding a solution, shifts the perspective. The emphasis goes on discovering what worked when you solved a similar problem before. It does not involve an indepth analysis of the problem and its causes.

To define a future perfect position. Suppose the problem vanished overnight. How would you know? You may have to believe that miracles can happen. Just using your imagination in this way enables you to see a better future and what is required to create it. What you can do and not do to make it happen.

To scale the change. If 10 is your 'future perfect' position and 1 is as bad as it could ever be, where are you now ? What did you do to get there ? What would it take to go up the scale to achieve you goal ? Even just one point?

To discover what actions will count towards your goal. The resources, skills, experience and know-how that you have that you could tap into to take you towards your goal.

To affirm what resources and skills will help you change. Focusing on the positive dimensions of experience and how you will realise those inner resources and hidden potential. You have all the resources you need to be successful - you just have to learn how to tap into them

To take small actions. These actions, taken in the spirit of experimentation and exploration, can produce more thoughts, feelings and behaviours that will "count" towards your future perfect position.
