Hierarchy
of Needs
Abraham Maslow observed that people
strive to fulfil a variety of needs. These needs range from
basic needs, such as food, warmth and shelter, followed by
emotional and social needs such as appreciation and acceptance,
up to more personal needs expressed as 'self-actualisation'.

When the desires at one level are met,
the need grows to be satisfied at the next level up. Not everyone
reaches the level of self-actualisation.
The hierachy of needs provides a valuable
guide to what motivates people - such as an attractive working
environment or a position with status. Some organisations
provide packages of rewards or perks as incentives for employees
to aspire to higher levels of responsibility.
