Learning Labs
Handbook

This handbook contains a
range of tools to support the activities of Learning Labs
operating in a number of service improvement contexts.
What makes a Learning
Lab effective is that it shifts the way participants think
about the where they are now and where they want to be. It
adopts a future focus on solutions. This means looking for
ways of eliminating problems rather than spending a lot of
valuable time trying to understand the problem, which is the
result of past conditions that will have changed anyway.
By choosing appropriate
tools, depending on the learning needs of the Lab group at
the time, it is possible to explore new ways of thinking and
doing things. Having created an implementation plan that the
Lab participants think will work better than the old ways
of doing things, they reflect on the lessons learned and the
reasons behind their ability to agree on a preferred way forward.
Armed with this new perspective on their own capabilities
and the solution that emerged, the Lab is in a position to
recommend or action its recommendations
