How do Skill Gyms work ?

We see coaching as fundamentally a learning and change process, one that involves a number of core activities and skills. They are summarised in the attached Skill Gyms leaflet. For us, coaching involves creating a helping relationship, one that is conducive to reflective learning and a willingness to take action to change our 'way of being'. This requires a heightened awareness of the reality we create for ourselves in the language we use, the mood and emotional states we adopt and how we move and feel in our body - our shared human ontology.

Our Skill Gyms assume that participants will want to adopt a "hands-on" approach to coaching as an aid to leadership and behaviour change in the workplace. We adjust the content to deliver a more cognitive approach if required by the client sponsor.

The Skill Gyms introduce the core skills that will make it easier for participants to meet the challenges they face in a performance managed environment and apply those skills within their own service context. Each Skill Gym contains examples of the theory and practice currently found in the syllabus of ILM courses. The sessions are therefore an ideal introduction for those motivated to advance their skills and go on to obtain a Diploma in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching.
